With a lifetime of experience in the quantity surveying and general contracting industry, Ian held the positions of surveying director, deputy managing director and managing director before his appointment as chairman.
He has been instrumental in directing and leading the company through times of huge economic change and has played a fundamental role at every stage. His dedication to teamwork and sound entrepreneurial skills ensure that clients’ needs are fully met.
His experience and achievements in financial management span a wide range of sectors. He is also the author of ‘Commercial Management in Construction’.

James Walker BSc (Hons), ICIOB
Managing Director
As managing director, James is responsible for the overall financial management of the company. An imaginative and resourceful professional with strong team working skills, he has an enthusiasm for solving problems.
James has overseen the financial management of many office and commercial schemes as well as well as four £20m+ city academies and more recently, large scale energy projects.
His ability to successfully understand cost control and planning techniques, and his willing contribution to the value engineering process has allowed James to flourish from an initial assistant role to managing director of Surgo Construction.

Martin Blight CIOB & ICIOB
Estimating Director
Heading up the estimating department, Martin works with an established team of highly experienced estimators and is responsible for overseeing all tender opportunities and subsequent detailed bid preparations.
With 30-year’s industry experience to his credit, Martin’s depth of knowledge of estimating will ensure that we will continue to convert opportunities into live projects across a widening range of sectors to build on the company’s reputation as one of the region’s most respected building contractors.

David Blyth Bsc Hons
Commercial Director
Working in the construction industry for 20+ years, Dave Blyth has gained an extensive depth of knowledge and experience across all commercial aspects of delivering a wide range of projects.
Using his industry knowledge, he is responsible for interpreting market trends, implementing strategies to drive business growth, identifying improvements to Surgo’s commercial procedures and making commercial recommendations to the Board as well as setting and delivering the company’s forward plans, along with the rest of the Board of Directors, to support our continued success.
Dave also has responsibility for resolving contractual and commercial issues.
