Competing against many regional high-calibre contractors and property specialists, Surgo Construction (Surgo) has announced it has been shortlisted in this year’s Insider NE Property Awards in two categories.
The Awards celebrate the success and achievements of the property sector over the course of the last 12 months, recognising and rewarding those that have been involved in some of the best and most significant developments and deals over the period.
Insider assembled an independent panel of property experts to judge all the entry submissions and to determine the shortlists and the eventual winners. Surgo has been shortlisted in both the Contractor of the Year and Retrofit and Refurbishment categories.
In the latter category, the Surgo chose to submit the sensitive and contemporary refurbishment of South Tyneside Council’s South Shields Crematorium. The successful refurbishment and extension project was a clear demonstration of great teamwork between the contractor, GSS Architecture (architect), Helm (project manager), Gardiner Theobald (client’s representative) and Jasper Kerr (structural design engineers), as well as the local supply chain.
Speaking about being shortlisted in such prestigious awards, Surgo’s managing director, James Walker, said:
“To be shortlisted in two categories in the forthcoming property awards is a testament to the longevity of Surgo Construction and the tenacity of our team to work closely with clients and professional peers alike to deliver exceptional schemes and I’m delighted that this has been recognised.”
Commenting on the crematorium refurbishment scheme, James added:
“The crematorium is a key asset to the local community of South Tyneside, and it was imperative that while a major construction project was being undertaken funeral services could continue. This was only achievable by collaborating with the Bereavement Services team to develop and implement detailed programme planning and the site team working unsociable hours for the first 5 months of the programme, leaving the crematorium fully operational 3 days per week.”
Following each ‘closed’ period the contractor would reinstate the building to the fitting and respectful space required to support grieving mourners.
The winners will be announced at a gala awards dinner which will be taking place at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on 18th May 202.
The sponsors of the North East Property Awards 2023 are Cool Blue Brand Communications, Cosentino, Fuse, GB Bank, Hale, Hollis, Porcelanosa and Swinburne Maddison, with UNW sponsoring the networking booklets.
