The North’s coolest office- and we built it!
Surgo is pleased to announce one of its recently competed projects, the refurbishment of the Old Post Office, one of Newcastle’s best loved historic buildings, has been named ‘The North’s coolest office’.
Since completion, the project has won the British Council for Offices (BCO) North of England Refurbished/Recycled Workplace 2017 Award for returning the Grade II listed building to its original unified state and creating a modern, airy environment for NBS’s 200+ employees and visitors.
Working with JDDK Architects, Surgo was appointed in 2016 by NBS to undertake extensive internal remodelling of the Old Post Office, a landmark Grade II listed building opposite St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle city centre.
The building named ‘The North’s coolest office’ now contains some 3,500m2 of office space, meeting rooms and extensive staff facilities including a staff gym. There are also exhibition, lecture and event spaces as well as incubator spaces which are now let to local businesses.
Richard Waterhouse, Chief Executive of NBS, commented:
“When The Old Post Office was built, more than 150 years ago, it was to the most contemporary design and layout—and we are delighted to be continuing this tradition. It was also designed to be used and enjoyed by the public and, since the work has been completed, we’ve been able to participate in events like Heritage Open Days and the Late Shows which have seen more than 1,000 members of the public come through our doors.”
