Surgo gets new housing scheme underway at Acklington

Surgo Construction, one of the region’s longest established building contractors, has announced that work is now underway at Acklington on a £5m residential development for Buchanan Estates.

Named Southfields, the niche residential scheme comprises 16 individually styled homes including two-bedroom bungalows, three-bedroom terraced houses, four-bedroom semis and four and five-bedroom detached homes, all arranged within a courtyard setting.

The development is being constructed on the former Pearson’s Garage site and land once occupied by RAF Acklington, the home of the Southfields aerodrome, which closed in 1975.

Created by architects Blake Hopkinson, the dwellings have been designed using familiar built forms, traditional materials and architectural detailing.

Following the removal of the old garage buildings and early site preparation works, commenting on progress, Surgo director, Dave Blyth, is pleased to see work finally get underway.  He said:

“It was necessary to undertake some essential site preparation work which has been carried out fully in accordance with the strict Government coronavirus guidelines that we now adhere to and I am pleased to say that construction has now started in earnest.

Surgo can claim credit for many local housing developments, including Nursery Gardens, a 34-unit scheme currently on site in Stannington, near Morpeth.  Blyth continued.

“We have a growing reputation for collaborating closely with developers who want to create high quality homes. Southfields is our first development in partnership with Buchanan Estates and we are looking forward to watching the scheme progress.”

Intended to fit seamlessly into its natural surroundings, overlooking open countryside to the south, creating an enviable place to live within a thriving community, Southfields is close to public transport including the Acklington railway station and other nearby amenities.

Coupled with the growing interest in Northumberland from buyers across the UK, particularly those who no longer want to live in built-up areas, strong interest in the scheme is expected.

William Davies of Buchanan Estates added: “I am delighted to see work underway on this niche site and have every confidence in the choice of our highly experienced development partner, Surgo Construction and the appointed selling agent, WalkersXchange.

“The site’s historic links to World War II when RAF Acklington was a base for Spitfires and Hurricanes, have been the inspiration behind the branding for the development.

“I like to think we are giving the site a new lease of life with this wonderful, carefully designed residential development and look forward to being able to release the first units to sell off plan in the near future.”

Architect Darren Blake, who is also acting as employer’s agent and project manager on the scheme.  added:

“Acklington is a beautiful village with a strong character. There are some wonderful vernacular buildings in the village, and we wanted to complement the setting with a scheme which has echoes of a traditional rural courtyard yet provides a range of properties that meet contemporary lifestyle demand.”

In addition to Southfields, Surgo is currently on site in both Northumberland and Durham delivery high quality residential developments worth circa £18 million.
