CONSTRUCTION KICKS OFF SWIFTLY ON AFFORDABLE HOUSING SCHEME
Surgo Construction Ltd (Surgo), one of the region’s leading building contractors, has commenced work on a £2.2m design and build affordable housing contract for Karbon Homes at Uphill Drive, Sacriston, Co Durham to provide new bungalows for rent.
To make way for the new development, Surgo recently concluded works to demolish and remove a row of garages that had previously occupied one side of the site which has allowed a swift start on the new project.
Karbon Homes is one of the largest housing associations in the North East of England and Yorkshire. The new development, for residents aged 55 or over, will provide 19 two-bedroom bungalows in a traditional build, five of which will be detached.
The completed homes will make a positive and much needed contribution to the availability of affordable housing in the area.
All properties are of a brick and block construction. They will be accessed from the main road and each will have parking for two vehicles as well as their own outdoor space.
Surgo secured the appointment because of its strong working relationship with Karbon Homes and its in-depth experience of delivering social housing projects of this calibre.
Commenting on the start of construction, Martin Blight, director at Surgo said:
“We are delighted to be working with Karbon Homes again as part of its ambitious plans to support the region’s communities through affordable housing, which are making a significant difference to local neighbourhoods.
“It’s great to have started work on this scheme which will offer 19 occupiers the chance to live in much-needed affordable rental properties.,
“It is a tight site, surrounded by existing houses, however, with careful planning and drawing on our prior experience of working on such sites, I am confident we will cause as little disruption as possible to the local community.”
Zoey Hawthorne, assistant director for development delivery at Karbon Homes, said: “It’s exciting to get this latest development started and to be in a position to bring forward a selection of affordable homes for older residents.
“We’re glad to be working with Surgo to bring this scheme forward.
“Karbon is investing in several sites within Sacriston, where we already manage over 500 homes. We have recently received planning consent for new townhouses on a site on Plawsworth Road, just a short walk away from Uphill Drive.”
With a 56-week build schedule the Uphill Drive project is expected to be finished in early Autumn 2021.
The project has benefited from £665,000 of funding from Homes England.
Other project partners include Identity Consult, BSBA Architects and RV Engineering.
